Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Review

Image
March 18, 2008 - No matter what words I place here, truly devoted Final Fantasy VII fans will undoubtedly play Crisis Core, the prequel to the original RPG classic. The old PSone title not only heralded the franchise's transition from 2D sprites to 3D, but it has since garnered one of the most passionate followings of any RPG to date. So now that Crisis Core is due to arrive in stores next week, loyal fans may be pondering whether their inevitable purchase will be ultimately fruitful. I'm pleased to say that Crisis Core is a great game and, barring a few minor issues here and there, will not disappoint. So if you were planning on picking up a copy regardless of what I say, rest assured that you'll have a colossal amount of fun. But we have quite a bit of material to cover, so let's start with the basics. While the original Final Fantasy VII followed Cloud and company as they attempted to stop Sephiroth from undoing the very fabric of the world, Crisis Core puts a much

UFC 2009 Wishlist

April 9, 2008 - With the ascension of MMA and, in particular, UFC into the mainstream, the public has been clamoring for a UFC video game for some time. 2004's UFC Sudden Impact represents the last UFC game to hit the marketplace. That game was developed by Opus, but its main competitor, the PRIDE FC series of games, was produced by THQ. It's the latter company that will be responsible for the upcoming UFC game, tentatively titled "UFC 2009". The PRIDE game was seen as the superior of the two at the time (Jeremy Dunham gave PRIDE FC an 8.0 , while he gave UFC Throwdown, the last UFC game reviewed on the site, a 7.2 . Neither, though, is up to the standard that fans will expect of the first UFC game in four-plus years. So, enter us. We've been MMA fans for about ten years now, going back to when we had to go to Blockbuster and rent UFC tapes on VHS because they were still banned from pay-per-view. We've seen MMA shows from five continents, watched shows live a

Hands-on Zenses Ocean

April 9, 2008 - Causal games have found a perfect home on DS, and while we've seen a seemingly never-ending slew of them, only certain titles out there go from being meaningless shovelware to actually gaining any sort of recognition from the more hardcore DS fan base as well. Anyone can make a virtual pet game (that may or may not end in the letter "Z") and sell approximately one billion copies worldwide, but it takes a stronger design to make something that actually appeals to everyone out there, and is really worth your cash. Game Factory is out to give the casual world of gaming a shot on DS, but rather than going with the younger skewed titles the company is known for – Build-A-Bear and Code Lyoko instantly ring a bell – DS owners are getting a pair of titles aimed more specifically at female non-gamers, but intended really for anyone interested in a more casual approach to games like Brain Age or Big Brain Academy. Zenses is an entirely touch-based franchise hitting

Mass Effect PC: What to Expect

Image
April 9, 2008 - Just yesterday BioWare let everyone know that the PC version of Mass Effect won't see the light of day until May 28 in North America and June 6 in Europe. To get some clarification, we talked with Diarmid Clarke, BioWare's project director for Mass Effect PC, and Matt Atwood, a senior public relations director at BioWare. In addition to talking about recent screens showcasing a new head-us up display (called a "tactical HUD"), the two went into detail about the differences between the PC and Xbox 360 versions, some of the challenges associated with the transition, and what to expect in terms of extra content after this version ships. We last saw the game at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco this past February, where we were given a brief demo that you can read about here . For the latest on Mass Effect, read on. IGN: As project director, what are you responsible for? Diarmid Clarke: It's basically taking one of BioWare's prope
