Arkadian Warriors Review

Image
It's easy to get excited about the idea behind Arkadian Warriors . There's something about cooperative dungeon crawlers that makes them fun, despite the highly repetitious gameplay. Arkadian Warriors is lacking that certain something. It's lacking quite a bit more, as well, like level design, story and character progression. If you're looking for a game that is completely generic in every possible way, look no farther. Arkadian Warriors begins in a village. So far, so good. There's a shop, a person that will offer you a quest, a fountain to toss coins into and…well that's about it. This is just a hub for the series of boring fetch quests and poor boss battles that are to follow. From the town, you can upgrade your weapons, helmet and armor, move on to your next quest, or replay old quests. After you play the first quest, you might find yourself thinking that the game isn't half bad. You've got one button for attacks, another to activate your Alter Ego (a

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock UK Review

Image
If you haven't played a Guitar Hero game by now, it's probably down to one of two reasons: you're so rhythmically disinclined that letting you loose on the dance floor is tantamount to arming an epileptic with a battle axe in a crowded room and turning the strobes on. Alternatively, I dunno, you've just woken from a coma/escaped from jail/shaved your beard for the first time in 15 years and the whole thing is a new, barely conceivable concept. If that last lot's you, all you really need to know is that Guitar Hero III is mostly super. Of course, if you're an old hand at this pseudo-fretting lark, the most important thing to stress is that GHIII is almost exactly the same game as its gazillion-selling predecessors - online multiplayer mode aside. This time though, original developer Harmonix has left the building, the series now in the capable hands of Neversoft. Ordinarily, a switch in development duties probably wouldn't raise much of an eyebrow. However, w

Call of Duty 4: Collector's Edition Review

Image
They say war is hell. Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare takes you to the very depths of Hades. The long-awaited COD4, IW's follow-up to the excellent Call of Duty 2, is a jarring, intense, and gripping take on war in the new millennia. The enemies are smarter, the weapons are deadlier, and the grenades all too plentiful. COD4 will shake loose your fillings and have you begging for more. Infinity Ward was born out of the success of retelling some of the greatest battles in World War II. The company has become synonymous with the virtual beach at Normandy. So it was quite a gamble to break from the comfort zone of Nazi-occupied Europe and leap into present day. The gamble paid off. Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, and every other military-based shooter has been put on notice. There is a new standard to judge this sub-genre and it is Call of Duty 4. The meticulous care IW took to faithfully recreate WWII-era weaponry was also given to bringing modern armaments to life. Many

NCAA March Madness 08 Review

Image
The college basketball season is like a locomotive shooting down the side of a mountain. It starts slowly, pushing off from a fully stopped position then continues to build speed and momentum until it reaches its terminal velocity, symbolized in college round ball by the tournament to end all tournaments, otherwise known as March Madness. Each year EA Sports' collegiate contender of the same name goes through a similar process of releasing to little fanfare and then gaining popularity as the suspense and excitement for the NCAA Tournament builds. For basketball gaming diehards however, their fix for college b-ball has just arrived for the ensuing season. Does it perform under pressure or crumble at the first sight of adversity? Each year NCAA March Madness focuses on one new feature that will hopefully help to deliver a more complete basketball package to fans. This year that one focal point of development attention is low-post play, both on offense and defense. EA Canada has said

Devil May Cry 4 New Look

Image
About a month and a half ago, Capcom finally exposed a little bit more gameplay from Devil May Cry 4 , its highly anticipated action title. At Capcom's Gamer's Day event, Producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi highlighted a number of gameplay features, such as Nero and Dante's first battle, Dante's new weapons and Nero's augmented powers. Recently, we were fortunate enough to have Kobayashi come into our offices to show us a little more of the game, as well as sit down and answer some questions about the title itself. Kobayashi started off the demo by showing Nero's advancement to Fortuna Castle once again, which let him highlight some of Nero's different moves. For example, the Blue Rose, Nero's pistol, can be boosted with an attack known as a Demon Charge, which makes each shot from the gun more powerful. This can be coupled with Buster punches and throws from the Devil Bringer arm that Nero has to perform extremely strong combos to eliminate opponents. The Demon

Burnout Paradise Update

Image
Last week we brought you a look at the forthcoming downloadable demo for Burnout Paradise , set to hit the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live on December 13th. While the demo is great fun, it's nothing compared to what you'll find in the full game, which we've been burning through ever since. It's no secret that Criterion Games likes to reinvent things every time out. Though many deemed Burnout 3: Takedown to be pretty much perfection, the studio went ahead and changed a lot of things with its follow-up, Burnout Revenge. And now with Burnout Paradise, the studio has made even more sweeping changes to the design. For starters, the entire game is set in the open world of Paradise City, and the whole thing is unlocked right from the start. You can partake in any race or event that you want, and there are no off-limit sections of the city. You'll have to work your way through the game to get better cars, of course, but the city is yours for exploring right away. Blink
