Devil May Cry 4 New Look

About a month and a half ago, Capcom finally exposed a little bit more gameplay from Devil May Cry 4, its highly anticipated action title. At Capcom's Gamer's Day event, Producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi highlighted a number of gameplay features, such as Nero and Dante's first battle, Dante's new weapons and Nero's augmented powers. Recently, we were fortunate enough to have Kobayashi come into our offices to show us a little more of the game, as well as sit down and answer some questions about the title itself.

Kobayashi started off the demo by showing Nero's advancement to Fortuna Castle once again, which let him highlight some of Nero's different moves. For example, the Blue Rose, Nero's pistol, can be boosted with an attack known as a Demon Charge, which makes each shot from the gun more powerful. This can be coupled with Buster punches and throws from the Devil Bringer arm that Nero has to perform extremely strong combos to eliminate opponents. The Demon Charge, Kobayashi mentioned, could be performed regardless of the power level of the Devil Bringer – which, we've noticed, allows Nero to fling blades of energy or project a spirit from his body when fully charged up. However, we also noted that the balance of these strong attacks was implemented thanks to some of the meters within the game. For example, Nero's Exceed Meter on the Red Queen (his sword with the motorcycle handle grip) could only be charged up so many times and would slowly bleed energy away if it wasn't used in time.
After showing off a number of sections with Nero (including the introduction of Gloria, which is one of the most "flexible" entrances we've seen in a while), Kobayashi shifted over to Dante. Again, Kobayashi showed off Trickster, Royal Guard, Sword Master and Gun Slinger as he fought his way through a jungle environment. This was an introduction to the newer weapons in the game, such as the melee based Gilgamesh. However, unlike the demo at the Gamer's Day event, Kobayashi was able to pull off a couple of powered up Dragon Punches, knocking a few opponents skyward with Dante's fists. He mentioned that the development team spent a lot of extra time adding more kicks and punching moves into Dante's repertoire with the Sword Master style and Gilgamesh weapon equipped. This was apparent as Dante quickly beat his opponents into submission.

After exploring the jungle ruins for a while, Dante wound up crossing the path of Echidna, the flying snake beast shown in the TGS trailer. Keeping in character with Dante's snarky response to monsters, the hero snapped off a few wisecracks after knocking the eggs of the monster back into its face. Of course, this helped kick off the boss battle between the two, which was a little bit trickier than when we saw Nero face off against the same creature. Part of this was because the Devil Bringer arm made it a bit easier for Nero to wound Echidna in its weak spot, but that didn't really matter for Dante thanks to the extra weapons and abilities he had. In fact, Kobayashi explained that the reason that both Nero and Dante would face the same bosses in the game is because the stories of each hero will take them through the same areas, so it made sense that they'd fight the same opponents.

One other thing that Kobayashi made sure to point out was that the differences between the PS3 and the 360 builds were so extremely small that it would be almost imperceptible for most players. In fact, he pointed out that the only technical elements that the development team were picking up on as they designed the game were subtle adjustments in color and light saturation on the two platforms. Kobayashi spent a little extra time switching back and forth between PS3 and 360 debugs, and it was pretty tricky to see any noticeable difference in the game itself, which bodes well for the performance and visual quality of the game. Luckily, players will have the chance to check this out for themselves very soon, because a demo will be coming to the PSN and Xbox Live in early 2008. For now, check out the latest gameplay and interview for the game below.
